- Build a warehouse of stories and remarks that you may use. You can find these by being an eager observer of day to day life. Alternative sources of humour papers, books, mags, conversation, films, Television etc. Make a written note of these stories and employ a filing system to specify them under appropriate headings.
- Observe other successful public speakers. Analyse how they use humor in their speeches. Do they begin with humor? How will they use it in their speech? What gestures, facial expressions, body language etc do the employ?
- Commit to memory the tale particularly the punch line. This is essential to the successfulness of the story. If you should chance to stumble over the punch line the possibility for humor is lost.
- Rehearse and Practice in front of a mirror, so you can see your demeanor, gestures movements for example. Also practice your timing and pauses. The more times you tell a joke the better you may become at telling it
- Make the stories topical to your speech. When using humor the point you are making it should illuminate. Stories and jokes that don’t relate to your speech will belittle the main body and will confuse your message and the audience?

- Know your audience. The humor used should match the spectators. Humor that is acceptable at convention of sales folk won’t be acceptable at a spiritual event.
- Don’t milk the gag for at least one laugh and if it falls flat, move swiftly on as if you didn’t expect them to giggle anyhow.
